What are Hawaiian Values, as stated in our mission statement? (Hawaiian) values transcend culture. Love, cooperation, respect, sharing, unity, etc. are not unique to the Native Hawaiians alone, as they are found to be at the root of all the world's cultures. KYC has adopted these particular Hawaiian Values as a means to deliver our services:

The core Hawaiian values are as follows:

-Aloha (Love and inner spirit)

-Malama (Caring for one another and the Environment)

-‘Ohana (Family and Community)

-Lokomaika’i (Generosity, Loving-kindness)

-Kupono (Honesty)

-Pono (Balance and Righteousness)

-Lokahi (Harmony, Unity and Collaboration)

-Ha’aha’a (Dignity and Respect)

-Kuleana (Responsibility and Accountability)

-Le’ale’a (Playfulness & Fun-lovingness)

The Kihei Youth Center is a community-based non-profit organization established in 1983 to help address the critical need for positive, healthy supervised activities and programs for the youth of Kihei, Maui. Over the last 25 years, as the community has grown from a quiet little South Maui town to the island’s fastest growing resort/residential population center, the Kihei Youth Center has expanded from a small recreational drop-in program to an established community hub that provides a comprehensive range of structured recreational activities, educational programs, cultural enrichment/appreciation programs, leadership development projects and family-oriented community events. With the organizational mission of

“strengthening the community through positive youth and family development by providing educational, recreational, vocational, cultural, social and prevention programs in a safe, healthy, nurturing environment embodied by Native Hawaiian values”, the Kihei Youth Center currently serves as many as 500 Kihei youth per year between the ages of 8 and 17 years old. Kihei Youth Center is proud to celebrate 25 years of service to the County of Maui!

Great news!

Kihei Youth Center is the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the A & B Properties Foundation and a $10,000 grant from the Atherton Foundation for our MERITS program that will begin in August of 2008. MERITS stands for Math and English Resources Important to Success, a homework assistance program with dedicated staff for KYC members. Please encourage your child(ren) to do their homework at KYC when they arrive as the opportunity is available everyday after school at KYC. Too often the members tell us that they do not have to do their homework. We have found out that the majority of parents want the kids to do their work at KYC. Keep in mind that it is the parent/guardians responsibility to correct the homework on a nightly basis as we may not be able to correct all homework. We feel that this is a wonderful partnership between the family and KYC.
